Contract Furniture & The Environment

May 22nd, 2017

Striving to be a more environmentally friendly furniture company doesn’t stop at producing hard wearing pieces with longevity. Advances in technology have provided ways for us to be more energy efficient along the whole manufacturing process. The main area we have worked on over the years is how we process and recycle wood off cuts. We’re really proud of our efforts to be a greener, more sustainable manufacturer; from recycling our timber, to burning our waste wood cleanly and safely to create energy.

Recycling wood with our biomass operation

Images from our European factory of our waste timber being made into heating pellets.

We inevitably have left over wood in our furniture manufacturing process, and our in-house biomass operation enables us to recycle our waste beech wood efficiently, by shredding it and converting into heat pellets for use in biomass-fired boilers. Sustainable electricity and heat is created by burning the wood chip biomass pellets in hot water or steam boilers, in the same way coal, natural gas and oil would be, but with dramatically lower CO2 emissions involved.

Our clean air burner

Our clean air burner enables us to reuse waste wood by-product by burning it in smokeless or smoke free zones. The process provides sustainable heating for our buildings, helping us to save resources and avoid using fossil fuels. This process also brings us in line with the Clean Air Act 1993.
